Depending on its installation position, the regulator rectifier can easily overheat. Other causes of a defective regulator rectifier include the battery. Ground connections are crucial for correct voltage. Incorrect voltage can cause the regulator rectifier to overheat. Poor ground connections, corroded battery terminals, and loose or faulty battery connections can also lead to voltage problems.
There are generally two ways in which the regulator rectifier can fail:
The first issue concerns a blown diode, which leads to battery discharge. Symptoms such as dim headlights and starting problems often lead to the mistaken assumption that the battery is faulty. However, checking the voltage with a voltmeter is more important than simply assessing the symptoms. If the voltage drops below 13 volts, the motorcycle will drain the battery and the engine will eventually stall. Check the connections for poor contact and corrosion; these can also cause voltage problems.
The second possible cause of the problem is a burnt-out shunt regulator. In this case, the regulator/rectifier can no longer regulate the voltage, leading to an overcharge of the battery. A voltmeter is also helpful for diagnosis here. Generally, readings above 17 volts indicate that the regulator/rectifier is not correctly converting the excess energy. The resulting overvoltage can cause the headlights to become extremely bright and burn out.
