Generally, there are two ways a regulator rectifier can fail. The first involves a burned-out diode, leading to battery drain. It's easy to assume the problem is a bad battery, given symptoms like dim headlights and poor starting. Checking the voltage with a voltmeter, in comparison to the symptoms alone, proves very helpful. If the voltage drops below 13 volts, the motorcycle will begin draining the battery, and eventually, the engine will stall. Check for poor connections and corrosion; these can also cause voltage problems. The other type of failure is a shunt regulator burnout, where the regulator rectifier can't control the voltage, leading to battery overcharging. Again, a voltmeter is useful for diagnosis. Generally, readings above 17 volts indicate that the regulator's rectifier isn't properly converting the excess power, and the resulting overvoltage can cause the headlights to become extremely bright and then blow out.
