Signs that your regulator needs to be replaced:
Depending on the position of the regulator rectifier, the component can easily overheat. Other causes of a faulty regulator rectifier at the battery are important for a correct voltage; if there is an incorrect voltage, the regulator rectifier can overheat. Poor grounding, corroded battery terminals, and faulty or loose battery connections can also lead to incorrect voltage.
There are generally two ways in which the rectifier of the regulator can fail:
The first problem involves a blown diode, leading to battery drain. Symptoms like dimming headlights and poor starting make it easy to assume the voltage needs to be checked with a voltmeter instead of relying solely on symptoms. When the voltage drops below 13 volts, the motorcycle will begin draining the battery, and the engine will eventually stall. Check the terminals for signs of corrosion.
The other type of fault is a burned-out shunt regulator, where the regulator rectifier cannot regulate the voltage, leading to battery overcharging. Again, a voltmeter is helpful for diagnosis. Generally, readings above 17 volts indicate that the regulator rectifier is not converting the overvoltage. With a proper power supply, this excess voltage can cause the headlights to become extremely bright and eventually burn out.
