***Important note regarding replacing the red seal in the pan:
*(If you do not see a visible red seal in the pan, please do not attempt to install this seal kit.)
*(Only fits pans where the red pan seal is visible from above.)

***Warning! Before attempting to install a new gasket, always check for thin cracks around the rivet heads on the inside of the pan bottom. If you discover a crack in the pan, you know it is leaking through that crack and cannot be repaired. If a rivet has come loose, appears to be popping out, or you can move the rivet head with your fingertip, the pan is leaking at that point. A new gasket will not solve this problem. If you find no cracks or loose rivets, continue reading and proceed with the repair.
Most of the older red seals that came with the pans were manufactured with an outer diameter of 19 mm. The 19 mm outer diameter seal was trimmed by the pan manufacturer to 17 mm to fit the 17 mm diameter hole in the pan. If your pan has this older seal and the pan shaft is still stuck, you can push the seal out by removing the retaining ring and wing nut wheel from the underside of the shaft. Then, with minimal force, push the shaft upwards and out of the top of the pan. This will push the seal out. If the shaft cannot be pushed out without excessive force that could damage the pan, please follow the instructions in paragraphs 2 and 3. If the pan shaft has already come loose and fallen out of the bottom of the pan, you must follow the instructions in paragraphs 2 and 3 below.
The newer red gaskets in later production runs of pans are specially made, double-tearable gaskets with a lower outer diameter of 19 mm and an upper outer diameter of 17 mm. These seals must be removed by prying them off with a double-ended bottle/can opener or a pick-and-hook set. The gasket can only be pried off if the pan handle has fallen out of the pan base. If the pan handle is still firmly in place, you cannot remove the gasket without damaging the pan. In this case, please do not order a new gasket. Please order a new pan.
***If the stem has already fallen out the bottom, you will need to pry out the old seal using an old double-ended can/bottle opener. Place a business or credit card on the bottom of the pan to prevent scratches while prying out the old seal. Insert the pointed end of the opener into the center hole of the seal and gently pry upwards from one side to the other until the seal pops out. Please note that the seal has an inner steel frame.If you have only removed a thin piece of rubber so far, you must remove the rest of the seal, also known as the inner frame. It is important to be very careful when removing the old seal. If the hole containing the seal swells, warps, or chips, the new seal may not fit properly.
***I strongly recommend removing the old gasket before purchasing a new one to determine if the pan is actually repairable. Please remove the gasket first and inspect the hole with a magnifying glass for chipped non-stick coating, pitting, corrosion, bumps, dents, swelling, or deformation. If any of the above damage is present, please do not order a gasket. I cannot guarantee it will not fit or seal properly.
***Please note that each time you replace the seal, it may not last as long as the previous one, as the bushing in the bottom of the pan continues to wear, causing more play and thus increasing the stress on the seal. The thin washer included in the seal kit replaces the nylon, Teflon, or fiber washer that was placed under the E-clip on the drive shaft. You will reuse any metal washers found at the bottom between the bushing and the wing nut wheel.
